About Us

Marin Organic is a bold new concept for preserving farmland and farming as a way of life in our region, focused on environmental soundness and economic profitability.

It was developed by an association of farmers, ranchers, agriculture advisors and marketing experts to serve Marin County's producers and consumers.

It is supported by the UC Cooperative Extension, Office of the Agricultural Commissioner, Marin County Board of Supervisors, Marin Agricultural Land Trust, Marin Food Policy Council, and consumers throughout the county.

Our Mission

Marin Organic is a cooperative association of Marin County organic producers whose livelihood is based on a respect for nature and a sense of place.

We understand the importance - ecological, social, and economic - of bringing the field closer to the table.

Therefore, we are dedicated to continually improving our farming practices, promoting the ethical, creative, and patient enterprise of sustainable agriculture, and encouraging a preference for locally produced food.

Our Goals

STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

1. Local Farmer Support
We offer education, knowledge and resources for Marin County organic and non-organic agricultural producers that improve their farming and management practices economically, environmentally and socially.

2. Marketing Local Products
We create an expanded market share for organic food produced in Marin County through marketing and public education.

3. Public Outreach and Education
We build public and governmental support for sustainable food systems by producing exceptional food, public education campaigns and special events.

4. Environmental Resource Preservation
We offer and manage programs that help Marin County producers meet and exceed government organic standards, as a fundamental component of environmental protection.

5. Alliances and Coalitions
We establish and strengthen relationships with businesses, government, and other organizations such as member producers, farming associations, restaurants, schools and environmental groups in order to promote local, organic agriculture.

6. Organizational Capacity
We primarily create the resources required to accomplish the organization’s mission in Marin County, and further build Marin Organic’s capacity to serve as a model on a regional, state, national and international level.

TOP TEN PROGRAM GOALS FOR 2008 – 2010

1. Educate Marin County and the wider Bay Area about the importance of supporting the local and organic food system, including the positive impact purchasing and consuming local, organic food has on our economy, environment, social welfare and public health.

2. Increase Marin Organic Producer Membership adding new members each year.

3. Support the conversion of 10,000 acres in Marin County from conventional agricultural production to organic production.

4. Help producer members economically by expanding brand recognition and demand for local organic products.

5. Increase the sale of locally grown, organic food at the farmers market by 10% each year, or 35% by 2010.

6. Enroll 50 Marin schools in the Organic School Lunch and Gleaning Program by 2010.

7. Provide free gleaned local, organic food to 15 different low-income resource centers, elderly care facilities and daycare centers by 2010.

8. Provide volunteers and interns to support our farmers, training opportunities for young farmers and educational opportunities for the public in order to bridge the knowledge gap between farmers and the general public about agriculture.

9. Add two new public programs that help to expand and diversify Marin Organic’s earned income revenue stream, enabling the organization to become less dependent on annual fundraising.

10. Set aside ample resources for a reserve fund, ensuring the financial health of Marin Organic in perpetuity.
