Marin Organic is a proud Partner of the Farmer Veteran Coalition, whose mission is to mobilize our food and farming community to create healthy and viable futures for America’s war veterans. This apprenticeship-based program places veterans on farms where they are able to acquire agricultural job skills, help build our green economy, and create a safe and healthy food supply for all – all while healing from the trauma of war by working daily with the earth.

At a time when small family farms through the United States are struggling to stay economically afloat, Marin Organic has helped create such as strong infrastructure, awareness, and appreciation for local organic products, increasing demand for more acreage to be turned into organic production, and the certainty that any organic product grown or produced in Marin County will sell well. With 37 producer members, Marin Organic’s knowledge of marketing, branding, labeling, distribution, and sales, will help any aspiring farmer – in Marin County or elsewhere – to run an economically sound operation. Placing war veterans in such an environment will help them learn the job skills necessary to farm anywhere, and encourage them to consider farming as a profession after their internship on a Marin Organic farm has ended.

Marin Organic’s work is as much about keeping small-scale farming operations economically viable as it is about building relationships and caring for the environment and the community in our food shed – and as a model for beyond our county line.
